When Carolyn came to Agate last winter, she was living in her car. She had lost her housing and her job after struggling with her mental health and a substance use disorder. She didn’t know where else to turn. “I just prayed this place would help me,” she remembers.

At first, shelter was overwhelming. But Carolyn quickly met staff and volunteers who reminded her she was not alone. They walked beside her as she worked through barriers like past rental debt and the fear of reaching out for help. Staff encouraged her, held her accountable, and helped her take the next steps.

Carolyn felt truly supported. With Agate’s help, she applied for housing and learned how to navigate the complicated systems of escaping homelessness. Even when the process was frustrating, she kept going. Finally, she got the news she had been waiting for: she had a place to call her own!

Now Carolyn has a safe, stable home. She can rest, welcome her grandchildren over for playdates, and start planning for her future. “Right now, I’m just glad to be alive,” she says with gratitude.
